They successfully developed 560 mW high-power UV LED and their strategy is to take the dominant position in UV LED market which has a higher technical barrier.

LG Innotech announced on the 20th that they succeeded in the development of a high-power UV LED package which has solved the problem of low optical power that had been an obstacle to market expansion, and started mass production of the product in this month.

LG Innotech's high-power UV LED has up to 560 mW of optical power when 500 mA current is supplied. The optical power of competing products is 450 mW at 500 mA current. LG Innotech's product enjoys a 24% higher optical power.

To overcome the limited optical power of UV LED, LG Innotech applied the ‘vertical LED chip design.’ They maximized the optical power by while minimizing the GaN layer which interfered with the light discharge from the UV LED. As a result, they achieved the maximum optical power while maintaining the LED package area of 6 mm2 which is equal to the cross-sectional area of a pencil.

Furthermore, existing UV LEDs only used the 405 nm wavelength, because it is difficult to form the photogenic layer because the UV has a shorter wavelength than visible rays and invisible to human eyes. Until now, LG Innotech has developed UV LEDs of wavelengths ranging from 280nm to 405 nm. The broader the range of photogenic wavelengths is, the greater the level of utilization becomes.

LG Innotech also succeeded in the mass production of UV LEDs with 6-inch large wafers with improved productivity. As a result, they now have higher price competitiveness in comparison to technology. According to the company, their 6-inch waver-based UV LED has about 28% improved productivity than the 2-inch waver counterpart does.

LG Innotech anticipates that their high-power UV LED package will be actively applied to industries for hardening liquid materials or light exposure process.

"We improved optical efficiency by 37% in just five months after starting research with our proprietary LED chip technology,” said a representative from LG Innotech. “We will start mass producing 365 nm wavelength UV LEDs that have maximized optical power to 600 mW. This will strengthen our position as market leader over Japanese and U.S. companies."

According to the French market research firm Yole Developpement, the UV LED market is expected grow fast at minimum 40% CAGR from 64.1 billion won in last year to 134.1 billion won in 2014. The share of UV LEDs in the UV light source market will increase from 16% last year to 25% in 2015.
