The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced that it has been notified that three marinated mushrooms products, manufactured in Poland, do not bear the correct allergen labelling. The products contain sulphites, which are not declared on the label.

The products are affected by this alert are: Provitus Podgrzybki Marynowane-Xerocomus badius, Provitus Kurki Marynowane-Cantharellus cibarius, Provitus Opienki Marynowane-Armillaria mellea. They bear best before dates between 31 December 2013 and 31 May 2014 and are sold in 250g glass jars.

More than 150 jars of these products have been distributed to specialist Polish shops in the UK.

FSA has advised people with asthma, and those with an allergy or sensitivity to sulphite to not eat these products as it can lead to an adverse reaction.

Sulphites are used as preservatives in a wide range of foods, especially in sausages, soft drinks, burgers, vegetables and dried fruit. They maintain food color and extend shelf-life by preventing the growth of micro-organisms.
