Scrabble and Merriam-Webster are updating the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, and fans have the chance to nominate a word to be included.

This marks the first time in nine years that the Dictionary has been updated, and from today up to March 28th, Scrabble fans can nominate words to be included in the new version at the Hasbro Game Night Facebook page.

Nominations can be anything from fan favorites yet to be made official to a new word that has become popular since the last edition landed in 2005.

On April 2nd, Scrabble and Merriam-Webster will unveil sixteen words from those nominated and fans will then vote for the winner of the 'Scrabble Word Showdown' on the Hasbro Game Night Facebook page.

The chosen, newly playable, word will be revealed on April 10th and will then be seen in the fifth edition of the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary, available this August.

"The Scrabble Word Showdown will let fans nominate and vote on words that are fun and relevant for today's players," said Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president of marketing at Hasbro.

"We are excited to see which word rises to the top and makes its way into the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary."

Peter Sokolowski, editor at large at Merriam-Webster, added: "Our language changes faster than ever today.

"It's great to include a word in the new edition that dedicated Scrabble players are eager to use on the board."

Merriam-Webster's Official Scrabble Players Dictionary is the official dictionary for English-language Scrabble in the United States and Canada and is the official arbiter of which words are 'play eligible'.
